I’ve been very excited in recent weeks as I worked with a local architect to develop plans for an addition to my house.
Adding anything to a house in my neighborhood is a complicated matter. The house is over 100 years old, sits in the middle of a carefully regulated historic district, and is a row house where everything has to go through the front door to get to the back of the house. Needless to say, I’m taking great care with my approach to anything I do that might change a house that hasn’t been expanded beyond its original footprint since it was built.
After eleven and a half years, I’ve decided it is time to make the dreams I’ve had since the year I bought it finally come true. My lot is deep and my plans modest. I want to add a small two story addition and a screened in porch. That’s it. We are not talking fancy or huge here, but every foot will probably cost far more than I ever could have imagined eleven years ago when I first pictured what I’d do with this house some day.
My excitement level has built with every step of the process. I met the architect (yay!). I signed a contract with him and he took measurements (double yay!). I received the one dimensional drawings of my ideas, augmented by some very good suggestions from the architect (triple excitement!).
But I have to admit that all of that was eclipsed by the arrival today of seventeen three dimensional drawings of the proposed addition from every possible angle. I’ve looked at them dozens of times, on screen, in print, and on my iPad (yes, I downloaded them to the latest fabu-gadget).
The excitement continues!
