During my first week of National Novel Writing Month (nanowrimo) writing, I experienced moments of sheer joy as I wrote the first few dozen pages of my new story.
That was when it really hit me: THIS is why I write. Those moments of joy at simply being able to write a new creation is a fabulous, powerful thing.
Too often, I think of writing as a chore — something I must do to reach the goal of finishing a book. This is particularly true during the more tedious process of rewriting or editing scenes. Rewriting is what must be done in order to turn a good story into a great one people will want to read, and it often feels like a chore.
Creating a new story, though, is so much fun for me that I felt absolute elation during my first week of nanowrimo this year. It helped that I was comfortable with the world I had created, and I loved the characters and story that was flowing from my brain through my fingers to the laptop.
I think the elation I felt a couple nights last week surprised me, but it shouldn’t have. I write because I LOVE writing! I love making up new stories. The places my mind takes me as my fingers fly across the keys amaze even me sometimes.
I love creating new stories, which is why I write. Otherwise, what would be the point?
